The comprehensive plan for Marcus Garvey Academy called for an $8.6 million upgrade for building infrastructure and renovations of academic areas in 2011. At the heart of these improvements was the new Harambee Center addition, which is the new gathering space for the school’s African-centered curriculum. A completely flexible space that can be secured from the rest of the school for use after hours, the Harambee Center provides a welcoming home for student gatherings by day, the lunch room for the middle school students, as well as ample accommodation for events for parents and the community on evenings and weekends.
